In life we can often get consumed by work and no, or far too little play! Our brains and bodies are not made for the fast-paced society we live in. Too often we are worrying about several things and we are attending to several demands. This places pressure upon us and leads our minds to be on high threat alert which can drain our resources. Finding a hobby can provide the much needed time to provide a break from the various demands placed upon us which can help alleviate stress and promote a positive emotional wellbeing.
It can be helpful to find a hobby which can provide us with either a good sense of enjoyment, achievement or closeness to others or even all three of these. It can also be beneficial to discover a hobby that is in line with your values i.e. things that are important to you. The more we live life in line with our values, the more satisfying and fulfilling life becomes. You can ask yourself the following questions to help identify your values:
· How would I like to enjoy myself?
· What relaxes me?
· When am I at my most playful?
· What hobby did I used to engage in that I enjoyed?
· What interests me?
· What skills do I have that I enjoy employing?
